大企業では取締役の人数が数十名と膨らんでしまい、意義的にも経費的にも無駄だという意識が出てきている。そこで生まれたのが取締役会と執行役員だ。企業の方針はこれまでの取締役が集まって、取締役会という組織の中で意見をまとめる。それを実行するのが執行役員の仕事というわけだ。
執行役員は「役員」という肩書こそついているが、取締役や監査役のような存在とは異なり、企業の方針などを決定するわけではない。とはいえ企業によってはその意味合いなどが曖昧になり、単に「執行役員は常務や専務の少し下」という位置づけにしただけで、あまり仕事内容に変化がない場合もある。
常務などが集まって作られる取締役会の方針決定が、執行役員の仕事量を左右するといっても過言ではない。執行役員はいわば管理職にとっての管理職という存在だから、目の上のタンコブになるのが取締役会ということになる。そういう意味では、役員とはいえストレスの多いポジションだといえる。
